Why is a Battery Management System (BMS) necessary? :

    1. An LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cell will be damaged if the voltage on the cell drops below 2.5 V.

    2. An LFP cell will be damaged if the cell voltage exceeds 4.2 V.

Lead-acid batteries can also be damaged if discharged too deeply or overcharged, but not immediately. A lead-acid battery will recover from a full discharge even if it has been left in a discharged state for days or weeks (depending on battery type and brand).

    3. The cells in an LFP battery do not balance automatically at the end of the charge cycle. The cells in a battery are not 100% identical. This is why, after a cycle, some cells will be fully charged or discharged before others. Differences will increase if cells are not balanced from time to time.

For a lead-acid battery, a small current will continue to flow even after one or more cells have been fully charged (the main effect of this current is the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen). This current helps to fully charge other cells that are out of phase in their charging, and therefore equalizes the state of charge of all cells. However, the current through an LFP cell, when fully charged, is close to 0, and out-of-phase cells will not be fully charged. These differences between cells can sometimes become very significant over time, even if the overall battery voltage is within its limits, and some cells will be destroyed due to overvoltage or undervoltage. Therefore, an LFP battery needs to be protected by a BMS system that will actively balance the individual cells and prevent overvoltage or undervoltage.
